I have always been drawn to the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin—a common sight in our saltwater creeks and ocean near Charleston, SC—and I knew one day I’d write a novel with the dolphin as the backdrop. While researching the intelligent, social and beguiling dolphins, so many layers began to take shape in this southern story that my idea for one novel quickly morphed into a series.
The themes of the series focus on communication, family bonds and connection (The Summer Girls, book 1); rehabilitation and the healing of self (The Summer Wind, book 2); the question of release from psychological and emotional barriers to discover strengths and desires (The Summer’s End, book 3); and finally love and marriage (A Lowcountry Wedding, book 4).
Throughout the series, my characters share unique connections with one wild dolphin, Delphine. They are all impacted by their experiences with this sentinel species. I paralleled the women’s challenges with the real-life challenges facing the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin today.
